This homemade costume for families entered our 2015 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Emily, the 'Toy Story Gang' costume creator:

Halloween 2015: Woody, Bo Peep, and Jessie because who doesn't love Toy Story and huge dresses?

Roughly 80% is made from scratch and/or modified.

Woody has a functioning pull string and a match in the holster. Snake in his boot? You betcha! His accessories were built up using craft foam and the vest was made using a shirt as a pattern, bound with black stripe bias tape.

Bo started with a $30 pink dress from Etsy and a white skirt from Amazon, transformed into what you see here using felt, lace, ribbon, and trims to finish it off. The bonnet was made using the Baby Jane Sunbonnet pattern. All this, complete with matching ruffled bloomers! (The 6-ring hoop skirt was essential!)

Jessie has braided yarn hair attached to a hand knit cap and her outfit was built off of thrift store finds (A white collared onesie with red trim? Awesome!). The yellow portion of her top was made from an oversized tshirt cut-down and added flutter sleeves - detailed and trimmed with red bias tape (those loops were a bit of a pain). Extra material and some stiff interfacing (along with handy dandy snaps) were used to make the cuffs and cow print chaps were made with black backing, then sewn right to the pants. And what's a cowgirl without her hat? Thanks to a thrift store find, that ran a whole $2.00.

PANTS:
For the pants, I used drawstring pajama pants from home to make a pattern--complete with a simple casing for a drawstring at the waist. I then added three layers of ruffles at the bottom, tripling the circumference of the pant leg to cut my rectangular blue strips of fabric for the ruffles.

BODICE LACE SKIRT:
I started off with a vintage pink dress--it had the puff sleeves already started! I deconstructed the dress a bit (removing lace and excess material from the sleeves) and reduced its length to just above the knee--that way I could take off the hoop skirt and wear a shorter dress if I wanted.

I took the same blue material used to make the pants in addition to a layer of lace to sew in a panel in the center, just attaching it over top of the original dress. I finished this center panel with some eyelet pre-cut trim and some ribbon to make the X's.

I cut the sleeves off the original dress and used white pre-made bias tape to finish off the sleeve and give the neckline a finished look as well since I removed a lace trim from there.

At the bottom of the trim of the center panel, I added a button on each side in order to attach the pink lace over-skirt. The pink lace was a rectangular piece of fabric with a small casing on the top for a piece of elastic to cinch it at the waist. I sewed only the two ends of elastic down and added loops to attach it to the bodice.

OVER-SKIRT:
The skirt was a purchase from Amazon -- it's a white circle dance skirt. I then used a circle cutter to cut pink circles from felt, used pins to place them temporarily and finished attaching them with a blanket stitch on my sewing machine. I also added button holes to the top to line up with the bodice. This kept the skirt from falling down. I didn't add any extra buttons to the back side as this seemed to be enough. Then, I purchased a hoop skirt from Amazon to finish off the look.

BONNET:
The bonnet was from a pattern on Etsy -- Baby Jane's Sun Bonnet. I used the excess material from the dress that I had cut off and same white bias tape to finish the edges. To keep it on, I used some white elastic and put a big white bow on one side.
